A Look into Reading Intervention at Educational Resources

At Educational Resources, we understand that reading can be a challenge for many students. Our reading intervention program is designed to provide essential support for those who struggle with decoding words, grasping reading concepts, or simply keeping up with their grade level.

Comprehensive Reading Support

We employ several highly effective programs that are based on the Orton-Gillingham Method. For example, the Wilson Reading and Spelling Program, the Lindamood-Bell Phoneme Sequencing Program (LiPs), and the Visualizing and Verbalizing for Language Comprehension and Thinking (VV). Each of these methods is tailored to address different aspects of reading difficulties and ensure that our students receive the best possible support.

1. Orton-Gillingham Method

This method provides a unique approach to teaching the phonemic structure of written language for individuals with reading challenges. Developed by Gillingham and Orton, it offers a sequential and structured reading system.

2. The Wilson Reading and Spelling System (WRS):

This structured method helps students learn to decode words effectively, which is particularly beneficial for those with dyslexia or other reading challenges. The program systematically breaks down words, teaching students to take them apart and put them back together with confidence.

3. The Lindamood-Bell Phoneme Sequencing Program (LiPS):

This program is tailored for students with underdeveloped auditory conceptual skills, which are essential for literacy. Research shows that improving these skills can enhance reading ability. LiPS helps students manipulate phonemes through discovery and sensory engagement, using tools like colored blocks, mouth posture images, and movable alphabet tiles. Tasks are introduced in small steps, focusing on foundational skills before progressing.

4. Visualizing and Verbalizing for Language Comprehension and Thinking Program (VV):

This approach promotes comprehension skills by encouraging students to create mental images of what they read, fostering a deeper understanding of the text. VV stimulates concept imagery, attention skills, memory, and cognitive development.

Customized Learning Experience

The reading intervention process at Educational Resources involves a step-by-step program designed for each student's unique needs. Students meet with their tutors three to four days a week, allowing for personalized attention and consistent progress monitoring. Our goal is to ensure that each child receives the guidance they need to succeed, whether they are dealing with dyslexia or simply require extra help to read at grade level.

Building a Supportive Environment

One of the key components of our program is the emphasis on building strong relationships between students and their tutors. Each student typically has the same tutor, and we strive to maintain a maximum of two tutors throughout their intervention journey. This consistency helps foster trust and comfort, allowing students to thrive in a supportive environment.

Celebrating Success

One of the unique aspects of our reading intervention program is the "Wall of Fame." Students who complete their reading intervention journey are celebrated and showcased, giving them a sense of achievement and pride in their progress. This recognition not only boosts their confidence but also motivates them to continue their literacy journey beyond our program. We are so proud of all of our students who complete our program and love to celebrate their successes!
